Suburbs of Berlin

Lindwerder Island

A ferry service connects the east bank of the river Havel with the island of Lindwerder in the middle of the Grunewald Forest. Which has 23 islets. This island is notable for the fact that here you can meditate in silence and greenery, swim, sunbathe or sail. And then eat right there on the island, with friends or alone, in a restaurant with a beautiful view. From Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 10 pm, it serves a variety of delicious dishes, including fresh fish. All products used in the restaurant are local.

Villa Max Liebermann in Wannsee

SUBURBS OF BERLIN

If you’re in Wannsee, check out the family home of Max Liebermann, the famous German Impressionist. The house was built in 1909 by the architect Paul Otto Baumgarten on the only surviving site in the Alsen summer villa colony. Paintings of the artist are present in the halls, and further the very view serves as inspiration opens from the windows. A cozy cafe with a beautiful garden by the lake is one of the most important motifs in Lieberman’s paintings.

New Venice

A labyrinth of small canals with countless bridges over them, beautiful villas and summer cottages along the banks in a place called Neu-Venedig (New Venice) is located near Wilhelmshagen. The Venice of Berlin, which is further accessible by the S-Bahn, is present since 1926 when the city of Köpenick acquired nearby land and laid canals to drain the swampy area. The total length of the canals is five kilometers.

Art Biesenthal

SUBURBS OF BERLIN

The garden of the historic town of Vermuhle, located in the middle of a UNESCO nature reserve, turned into an open-air gallery until the end of August. Every summer, the Art Biesenthal exhibition presents works by both emerging and established artists from around the world. The theme of this year’s festival is the natural world, with particular emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches. Restaurant Baldon is responsible for food and drink, and for this alone it is worth visiting the festival: exclusive dinners on Fridays, a small ever-changing menu on Saturdays and Sundays, dishes cooked on an open fire, a good selection of natural wines.

Forsthaus Strelitz

This estate was formerly acquired in the 1990s by the parents of Michelin-starred chef Wolfgang Pankratz. The family has further remodeled the home into a modern stand-alone rural inn with eight comfortable and stylish minimalist rooms. For a hearty rustic-style breakfast, guests wake up by the crowing of a rooster. During the day you can visit the farm where they keep sheep, pigs and other animals. In addition to that picturesque countryside surrounds these places. Most visitors come here for a sumptuous dinner (€79, pre-booked) from Chef Pankratz himself.
