A Berliner travels to Potsdam, which is 30 minutes by train from the Central Station, on the weekends, more in the summer, to take a break from the bustle of the capital, take a walk along the cozy squat streets and luxurious parks, view all the palaces, sit over a beer on the banks of the river Havel. In principle, this can be done at any other time of the year, except that dining on the terrace is not always possible. And the park statues are covered with wooden houses for the winter. And so everything is in place: parks, palaces, and streets.

Potsdam | Sweet Home

a charming historic center.

As soon as you leave the building of the main station, you immediately run into the Havel River. The bank of which was so attractive for its picturesqueness in the 17th century to Elector Frederick William the Great. He decided, in the fashion of that time, to build a palace here. And we, 300 years later, do not argue with the elector, but admire the view. And already behind the palace, strictly drawn streets with marshmallow-air houses of the Baroque era, one of the most beautiful European squares, are certainly inviting for a walk and contemplation of the details.

Potsdam also has a bright red brick quarter - Dutch

In addition to pastel houses, Potsdam also has a bright red brick quarter – Dutch, the largest outside the Netherlands. For the sake of 134 houses, the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm I ordered to drain and ennoble the land and invited a Dutch architect. The king knew exactly what his ideal home and even ideal city should look like. To Amsterdam. As a prince, he traveled to Amsterdam and The Hague. He returned, fascinated not only by Dutch architecture, but also by the country itself, which he always considered the most progressive.

After becoming king, he made Dutch dreams come true in the seat of Potsdam. All the churches built under him shine with Dutch elements. And even the only Hunting Palace – Stern, who ordered the construction of a stingy king. It looks like a large Dutch house made of red brick with a typical pediment. But, of course, the most striking embodiment of the dream was the Dutch Quarter.

Potsdam Sanssouci Park

Many go to Potsdam straight to Sanssouci Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The beginning of the palace and park complex was laid by Frederick the Great, with whose light hand the Sanssouci Palace first appeared outside the city gates. And gradually the Tea House and the New Palace became a part of carefree fantasies. Future generations of kings added their own buildings, each in the fashion of the era.

And further outside the gates of the park, on the shore of a lake full of history and beauty, a traveler is waiting for a brewery (Meierei im Neuen Garten, Im Neuen Garten 10, 14469 Potsdam), where you can drink a glass of fresh seasonal beer, try local cuisine for lunch.
