Spandau | Sweet Home

The archipelago of this city has existed for only about a hundred years. It included cities that are even older than Berlin. One of them is now the westernmost district of the city – Spandau. Half an hour by city train or just 20 minutes by train – and you find yourself in an area whose inhabitants, even 100 years later, say “go to Berlin” and “in Berlin”, as if it were a different city, not their city at all. On the face of it, this seems like foolishness. But walk along the streets of old Spandau and along the embankment of the Havel River – and it will also seem to you that Berlin is much further than half an hour.

Why go to Spandau?

For a walk around the old city.

Old Spandau, although damaged during the war, was not completely destroyed either during or after the war. On the winding streets of the old town, you can see the houses of the last six centuries. They are still woven into the busy city life. In one there is a restaurant, in another – a shop, and in the third – a museum.

Visit the Spandau Citadel.

The very fact that one of the most important fortresses of the Renaissance has survived to this day and not just anywhere, but in Berlin, is already amazing. And when you come to this, as if a creation descended from ancient canvases framed by water and greenery, it’s still hard to believe. This fortress survived Napoleon, World War II and years of seclusion when it housed a prison. Now she tells her story.

For a walk along the Havel.

The promenade along the Havel – one of the three Berlin rivers – is spacious and picturesque. He follows the river from the citadel, past the old city to an almost rustic place with small houses and moored boats.
