Berlin and the Brandenburg land surrounding it are called the “land of three thousand lakes”. There are almost a hundred of them within the city limits alone, and driving to the beach is as natural as riding a bicycle. It remains only to choose the most suitable lake.

Brandenburg and Berlin have over 30,000 km of rivers and canals, more than any other German state. The Brandenburg, together with the neighboring state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, form the largest river system in Europe. There is enough water for everyone on a hot summer day.

The water in the Berlin lakes is surprisingly clear and silky. The lakes here are smaller and nicer, easy to get to. The opportunity to get to the lake by bike or take the train to the forest to the lake whenever you want – not every big city has such a luxury.

Here is our list of the best lakes in Berlin. There are also those where you can simply escape from the bustle of the city and cool off in the summer heat, and those for which you need to climb deeper into the thicket.

Wannsee, classic

Lakes

The Great Wannsee Lake (Großer Wannsee) is located southwest of Berlin and attracts citizens and tourists with the longest beaches in Europe (not counting sea beaches), equipped at the beginning of the last century. The white sand for the 80 meters wide beach is brought from the shores of the Baltic Sea, and special wicker beach chairs called Strandkörbe, in the style of the 1920s, are placed along the entire length of the beach. You can rent a rowing boat, and there is a playground for children.

Krumme Lanke, quiet places

Lake Krumme Lanke is located on the edge of the Grunewald forest, and it is hard to imagine that this amazingly beautiful corner of nature was once a vacation spot for Nazi employees and their families (from 1938 to the end of the war). Street names have long since changed, reminiscent of those times. Walking along these quiet peaceful streets and through the forest around, you feel as if Berlin is somewhere very far away, in another world, and you can’t even believe that you can easily take the U-Bahn train and quickly return to the city center. The water in the Krumme Lanke is incredibly clean. Drinking water is taken from it for urban residents.

Templiner See - summer holidays

lakes in berlin

More than ninety years ago, Albert Einstein built here, then still in a simple village on the shores of a huge lake, a quiet country house. And today there is hubbub and crowds of swimmers, and on a hot day the real spirit of a summer holiday reigns. Full of SUP-boards, wakeboards, kayaks and sailboats.

Lipnitzsee - turquoise

The favorite lake of Eric Honecker and the leadership of the GDR, it was once inaccessible to ordinary residents. But then Germany united, and the island of Grosser-Werder in the middle of the lake, with a campsite located on it, became a popular holiday destination. The lake is quite large, the places around are wild, but the island gives a feeling of comfort and safety. The fabulous coniferous forest is full of trails, along which hiking trails of the 66-Lakes Trail are marked.

Orankesee - the urban alternative

lakes

Oranquese is a quiet, small lake surrounded by trees, with a pleasant little beach at one end and a natural park at the other. Just five minutes away, in the heart of the densely populated area of Weissensee, there is another lake, which is called Weissensee, but there are crowds and noise, but here, on Orangesee, it is much calmer. For a city lake, the water is very clean and clear. The beach buildings were destroyed during the war, then they were closed in Soviet times. They burned down in a fire in the late 90s, and now they have been restored again, along with a snack bar, changing rooms and a beach caretaker’s booth.

Lubowsee - seclusion

This lake is hidden very far away. And you can only get to it on foot, along a path through the forest. From Birkenwerder, walk 10 kilometers along the 66-Lakes Trail. Suitable for those who want to be alone.

Müggelsee - like Wansee, only to the east

berlin's lakes

The largest of all Berlin lakes is located near Köpenick. It is 4.3 km long and 2.6 km wide. In summer, there are a lot of people come to Berlin’s lake. And they also take water from it for plumbing for the eastern districts of Berlin. After swimming, you can go next door to Friedrichshagen, stock up for a picnic (there is a Bio Market supermarket) or sit in one of the many cafes. Along the banks of the Müggelsee restaurants, bars and beer gardens are also more than enough.

Rummelsburgersee - where there is always a party

lakes in germany

A little bike ride from Kreuzburg – and you’re already in Rummelsbucht. Where, there are a lot of bars, clubs and other party places, right along the lake. This lake, unlike many others, is located right next to the main street of the area. The place is relaxed and well hidden, but the atmosphere is like in the center of Berlin. Only the views are even better, and in addition you can rent a kayak or boat, or just swim.
