Zoo in Berlin | Sweet Home

Tourists in Berlin often come instead of the Zoological Garden to the Tierpark metro station – a menagerie. And they get into trouble. Historically, there are 2 zoos operating in Berlin at the same time. The menagerie zoo in Berlin is located on the territory of the former GDR, and the Zoological Garden is located in the western part of the city. The menagerie is also not bad, but still inferior to the Garden.

The oldest zoo in Germany was founded in the capital in 1844. The garden covers 33 hectares of area, on which 20,000 animals of 1,400 species live – a world record for diversity. Inside the park are a menagerie and an aquarium.

Behind the iron gate, decorated with graceful stone figures of lions, the visitor will experience a magical immersion in the world of animals.

All Germans know the story of the white bear cub Knut. He was born at the Berlin Zoo, but his mother refused to feed. Zookeepers began to feed the bear themselves.

The management invited the visitors to come up with a name for the teddy bear. Oh what a start! All of Germany was thinking about the poor orphan. The name Knut is popular.

Soon, the polar bear cub became a symbol of Berlin, people poured into the zoo like never before in the previous 163 years of existence. It ended with the fact that after 3 years in 2011 the bear suddenly spun in place, as if from a cramp, fell into the water and choked. Apparently, the mother somehow sniffed out that Knut was not healthy, and therefore refused to feed.

But even without Knut, there is something to see in the Garden. There are many rare exotic specimens among pets. Furthermore, the main attraction has become a family of pandas.

Huge covered enclosures, called Houses, have been built for 6 species. Inside the houses, a climate comfortable for residents is maintained and a typical habitat has been created. It contains:

Behemoths.
Monkeys.
Penguins.
Pandas.
Antelopes.
Elephants.
A separate house is available for birds.

Complementing the grandeur of the Garden is significantly a gigantic aquarium, the largest in Europe, which contains 16,000 fish and amphibians.

The garden is further open seven days a week and receives 3.5 million visitors a year, two-thirds of which are tourists.
