If you’re looking to get in a good swim this summer, Berlin has plenty of options. The city is famous for its chic architecture, museums and beer gardens but what many visitors don’t realise is that Berlin is also home to some of the best outdoor swimming destinations in Germany.
In fact, no other major European capital has more lakes with long-standing bathing traditions than Berlin. With so many lakes, you’ll find it’s easy to escape the hustle and bustle of the city center for some serious summertime fun.
Strandbad Wannsee in Zehlendorf, for instance, is one of the most popular and most beautiful open-air pools in the city. It’s a favourite amongst tourists and Berliners alike and is famous for its white sand and traditional wicker beach chairs. The beach can be quite busy on sunny days, so it’s a good idea to arrive early in the morning and stake your claim in a shady spot.
Lake Muggelsee in the east is also a good option, especially if you’re keen to hike around the entire lake. You can do this from either side but it’s a recommendation that you take the tiny ferry between Muggelwerder and Muggelhort, which runs every hour in the summer.
There’s also the Flakensee, which has a Mediterranean feel and is particularly popular in the warmer months. Taking a walk along the promenade is a great way to explore this stretch of water and there’s plenty of space for swimmers to spread out and relax.

Flughafensee is another deceptively small lake that’s a bit hidden from sight, but it has plenty of beaches and a sandy peninsula with a desert island vibe. It’s easy to reach from the centre of Berlin by bike, and there are also several beach bars mark around the island where you can sit back with a cocktail in hand and soak up some sunshine.
A few blocks away from the airport is the Haubentaucher (Great Crested Grebe pool) in Friedrichshain, which is a posh and stylish spot during the week but becomes a little more hectic on the weekends. It’s located within the RAW Gelande, a vast complex with semi-dilapidated and heavily graffitied buildings which hosts clubs and bars as well as a skate hall and climbing wall.
This is not a typical’ swimming pool’ but it has a hipster and more posh vibe than some of the more family-geared pools in the city, so we like to stop here for a quick dip after a day in the parks or when the weather isn’t too warm. It’s a perfect place to spend a few hours in a sunny day and is the newest addition to the pool scene.
There are a few more spots to cool off and have some fun in the water in the city, but for us, the best ones are the ones that aren’t too mass by the afternoon. It’s a good idea to check the website of the respective swimming pool and book your entry in advance to avoid a long queue.
