The Berlin art galleries offer a great opportunity to experience the best of contemporary and historical art in Germany’s capital city. Whether you’re after a modern masterpiece or a unique sculpture, there’s an array of exciting exhibitions and events taking place all over the city.

The most impressive and imposing of the city’s museums, the Alte Nationalgalerie houses a collection of incredible works, from Dutch and Flemish paintings to works by French Impressionists like Manet and Monet. The gallery also has a number of impressive Romantic and Neoclassical pieces from the 18th century.

Museum Island is home to many of Berlin’s finest museums. The Bode Museum is one of the most architecturally pleasing attractions in the city, and its sculptural collection is especially compelling. The building is a beautiful mix of neoclassical and baroque style, with bronze figures by Schluter from the 17th century lining the entrance hall.

Another architecturally stunning gallery is the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, which is renowned for its lively program of exhibitions and events. It has long been one of the most important cultural institutions in Berlin, and a visit to the institution is a must for anyone interested in modern and contemporary art.

An artists’ favourite, KW offers a steady flow of new exhibitions and a large permanent collection, presenting Berlin artists throughout the years, from Expressionism to Dada to post-war positions.

A few galleries focus purely on photography, including Robert Morat Galerie in Kreuzberg, which puts on a great variety of exhibitions all year round. The gallery’s small size means that it can really showcase its talented and discerning selection of photographers, which makes it a very interesting experience.

The Neues Museum is another of the most awe-inspiring of Berlin’s art galleries, offering a fascinating history of art from all periods and regions. Located within the beautiful former main train station in the heart of the old town, the museum is a fascinating place to go for art history buffs.

This swanky former bomb shelter has been transformed into a gallery that’s home to the work of internationally renowned artists like Olafur Eliasson and Wolfgang Tillmans. Booking of a tour of space should be in advance, but the opulent gallery is well worth the effort.

Despite the recent gentrification of Berlin, the city’s galleries have remained steadfast in their commitment to exhibiting the best modern and contemporary art. A new generation of local and international artists are leading the way in this city, with institutional highlights including Barbara Kruger’s takeover of the upper level of the Neue Nationalgalerie, a solo show by Mexican artist Mariana Castillo Deball at the Barbara Wien and Candida Hofer’s musings on vacant public spaces at Museum fur Fotografie

Other notable Berlin art galleries include a range of small private galleries and that have specialization in exhibiting only a few works per year, or in particular, the work of local photographers. These are usually the most intimate and exciting places to see what’s going on in the city’s art scene, so don’t miss out on these if you’re visiting Berlin.
