While classical buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries mainly  “dominate” the landscape of its center,  you will find a lot of Soviet construction in the northern part, and luxurious estates and well-kept private homes in the southern part. In addition, there are the new, luxury buildings around the bay of Rommelsburg, on the western shore of the Spree river. In a sense, Lichtenberg represents a miniature version of Berlin as a whole. How can you explain the flair of this East Berlin neighborhood?  It seems to be the excellent urban planning that blends in beautifully with the tranquility and the nature that Lichtenberg has to offer. Lichtenberg’s positive image has been continuously developing in recent years and it has been gaining growing popularity among the population of Berlin.
Here you will also find the largest zoo in Europe – the Tierpark Friedrichsfelde and the huge Herzberg Park, with its many hiking and cycling routes. Other notable sights include the old Loeperplatz Church, the Parkaue Theater and the Town Hall, which is famous for its neo-Gothic architecture. South Lichtenberg has many lakes and rivers, the largest of which is Lake Müggelsee.
